What can I tow
at my age?

Age causes a lot of confusion, but the date you passed your car test and the categories on your licence are what normally decide your entitlement.

Before

Test passed before 1 January 1997

Usually up to 8,250kg combined MAM

This normally covers the maximum authorised mass of the vehicle and trailer together. Check your actual licence record.

From

Test passed from 1 January 1997

Trailer up to 3,500kg MAM

This is category B+E. DVLA adds it when your licence is renewed if it is not already printed on the photocard.

Key point

Age alone does not set the towing limit

Check the licence start date

Two drivers of the same age can have different historic entitlements depending on when category B began.

Personalised guidance

Check your licence allowance

Use MAM figures—the maximum permitted loaded weights—not empty or estimated weights.

Licence entitlement is only one limit. You must also stay within the car manufacturer’s towing capacity, gross train weight, towbar and nose-weight limits, and the caravan’s MTPLM. The lowest applicable limit always controls.
