Caravan nose weight explained

Nose weight is the downward force the caravan applies to the towball. It affects stability and must remain within every applicable limit.

Which nose-weight limit applies?

Check the permitted values for the car, towbar and caravan coupling or hitch. Use the lowest applicable limit. A towbar rated to a higher figure does not increase the vehicle manufacturer’s permitted value.

How to check nose weight

Measure the caravan on firm, level ground in its normal travelling condition. Keep the hitch at approximately its towing height and use a suitable calibrated gauge or another appropriate measuring method recommended by the caravan manufacturer.

Loading changes the reading

Moving luggage forwards generally increases nose weight; moving it rearwards generally reduces it. Avoid using heavy items at the extreme rear as a quick correction because poor weight distribution can reduce stability. Keep heavy items low, secure and close to the axle where appropriate.

Check again before travelling

Gas bottles, batteries, motor movers, water, bicycles and holiday equipment can all change the reading. Recheck after meaningful loading changes and follow the caravan and vehicle manufacturers’ instructions.

Official sources and further checks

Rules and vehicle limits can change. Before towing, check GOV.UK towing-with-a-car guidance, GOV.UK towing weight and width limits and the documentation supplied by your vehicle, towbar and caravan manufacturers.
