Where to find gross train weight

The vehicle weight plate commonly shows gross vehicle weight first and gross train weight second, followed by axle limits. Confirm the plate layout for your exact vehicle rather than relying on a generic example.

Why subtraction is only a starting point

Subtracting gross vehicle weight from gross train weight can produce a rough plate-based towing figure. It is not automatically the manufacturer’s confirmed maximum braked-trailer limit, which may be lower.

Car loading affects the combination

Passengers, luggage, accessories and towball load contribute to the car’s actual weight. The caravan’s own loaded weight must also remain within its MTPLM. The complete outfit must comply with gross train weight, individual vehicle limits and axle limits at the same time.

The practical check

  • Confirm the manufacturer’s braked towing limit
  • Check the car’s actual loaded weight and axle loads
  • Check the caravan’s actual loaded weight and MTPLM
  • Remain within the plated gross train weight
  • Use a public weighbridge when exact loaded weights are needed

Official sources and further checks
